From Humanitarian to Coach
When I was just 11 years old, I declared to my parents that I wanted to be a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) otherwise known as Doctors Without Borders. Little did I know that this simple proclamation would set the course for a remarkable journey filled with purpose and compassion.
At the age of 19, my journey took its first tangible step as I embarked on a solo internship in a rice field in North Senegal. For three consecutive years, I pursued agro-development internships in different parts of the world, immersing myself in diverse cultures and communities. This journey led me to the beautiful country of Kenya which became my second home and where my exploration of the field and my experiences as a public health nutritionist truly flourished.
From there, I started my career and spent seven incredible years working in the field with various international NGOs before finally joining the MSF family. As a member of the Emergency Team, I roamed from one crisis to another across Africa. It was an intense experience and a dream come true.
While living in Nairobi, I visited the UNICEF office in Gigiri. As I walked through the corridors, I told myself that one day I would join the team and work for the country I had come to love. And so, the next chapter of my career began—with UNICEF Kenya. I was thrilled to work with partners and government counterparts for a country I loved so much and a cause I believed in deeply. I continued my journey and moved on to a global position in New York and finally a regional position in Senegal.
However, as the chapters of my career unfolded, I found myself at a crossroads. After dedicating years to improving the lives of others, I began to feel disconnected and question the relevance of my work. The endless cycle of extinguishing fires and drowning in administrative tasks left me drained and searching for meaning and balance. My usual drive was fading, except for those fleeting moments during field missions that reignited my connection and purpose.
Then, a turning point arrived in the form of motherhood. When I gave birth to my beautiful son, Axel, at 41, everything changed. I found myself questioning everything I knew. In his innocent eyes, I saw a reflection of the person I wanted to be—an example of resilience, self-determination, and the ability to redesign one's life. I couldn't bear the thought of telling my child that I had spent another two decades in a job that conflicted with essential values and aspirations, driven by fear, comfort, or status.
This realization struck me like a lightning bolt and triggered a complete shift in mindset. Though I didn't have all the answers or the tools, I knew I had the ability to find them. I started by embracing the present moment, appreciating my career as it stood, and creating balance and meaning for myself whenever possible. With the support of my manager, I reorganized my priorities and focused on projects I loved. I wanted to see where this newfound perspective would lead me, and if I could redesign my path from within.
Each morning, armed with my journal, I embarked on a journey of introspection, reflecting on who I am, my strengths, and my future. I rekindled my entrepreneurial spirit and rediscovered my passions for nutrition and food. This led me to open my first business, working at farmers' markets over the weekends and exploring the realm of giving people an experience to cherish with French foods. While this path presented its own set of challenges and proved unsustainable in the long term, it was an amazing experience and became an exhilarating chapter of my life that inspired me to persist in my quest for the right trajectory.
As I continued to explore and experiment, my focus shifted toward holistic well-being at work, and eventually professional coaching. It was a winding path, filled with twists and turns, but every step led me closer to my true calling. Though my journey may have taken longer without a coach by my side, the experiences, and learnings I gained along the way were invaluable.
After 23 years of service as a Public Health Nutrition Specialist for international NGOs and the United Nations, I understand the struggle of women and humanitarian professionals to grow a career they love while nurturing their well-being.
